Tips for Traveling to Tanzania

When traveling to Tanzania, where does the trip begin? Our trips begin in lodges in Arusha, Tanzania. With prior arrangements, we will pick you up at Kilimanjaro International Airport (Airport Code: JRO).

Which Airport Should I Fly Into?

Kilimanjaro International Airport

The most convenient way to travel to Tanzania is to fly to JRO. From there, clients will make their way to the designated hotel. It will cost approximately $50 for a taxi from the airport to Arusha.

We can also organize private transfers between the airport and the hotel. Pre-booked your transfers along with your climb. Local contact numbers and details on how to meet up with staff will be distributed upon booking.

Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO)

From North America, there are two main ways clients are traveling to Tanzania. The first and most popular way is by flying Delta/KLM from a major US city to Amsterdam and then from Amsterdam to JRO Airport.  There is one flight per day that arrives in JRO at around 8:00 PM.  When arriving on this flight, we estimate that it will take you one to two hours to get your VISA and bags.  You will get to your hotel in Arusha around 10 PM.

Furthermore, if you are arriving on this flight, which is the night before the climb, you’ll miss our pre-trip meeting. This is okay as we can do another pre-trip meeting in the morning. We recommend booking your flight to arrive the previous day.

Another popular way is to fly from the US on American Airlines/Qatar Airlines to Doha and then on to JRO.  This flight will bring you to JRO at around 1:00 PM.

Arusha Airport (ARK)

Arusha has a small airport within the city.  Flights into and out of this airport are very limited, but if you are coming from a nearby country, safari, or Zanzibar this may be an option for you. You’ll need to take a taxi to the hotel since we do not pick you up from ARK.

Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO)

Some clients choose to arrive in Nairobi, Kenya.  From Nairobi, you can take a daily shuttle bus to Arusha for about $50 USD.  The ride is about 5 hours. See here: https://www.riverside-shuttle.com/

To clarify, we do not provide any transportation to or from Nairobi.  Clients must arrange this transportation themselves.

Finally, the map below will give you a good idea of the locations of the airports and their relation to the cities and Mount Kilimanjaro.  Also, if you are interested in adding a safari, the locations of the parks are also on the map.
