Swedish brand Fjallraven, known for its iconic backpacks, makes some of the most durable trekking clothes on the market. They make trousers and leggings for every type of outdoor adventure from casual hiking to technical mountaineering and trekking and are surprisingly size-inclusive. Most of their bottoms range from US sizes 2-16 or XXS-XXL, and their inseam lengths range from 30”-34,” and they even make “curve” versions of their more technical trousers.
On Kilimanjaro
For my trip to Kilimanjaro, I knew I would encounter many different terrains and temperatures and would need a variety of bottoms to accommodate this. Since I already have too many durable trekking trousers, I wanted a pair of leggings that would keep me cool and comfortable in the warmer climates, but could also withstand the technical terrain as well as abrasion from my day pack.
I opted for the Abisko Trail Tights because they are medium-weight leggings with mid-range protection in high-wear areas. Their ceramic print provided invisible abrasion resistance in the seat and knees, which allowed me the peace of mind of knowing that I wasn’t going to end up with holes by the end of the trip if I bum-slide down rocks or sat down on rougher terrain. They feature a lighter material at the waist, crotch, and back of thighs to allow more ventilation in warm climates, like the rainforest at the lower altitudes of Kilimanjaro. I wore these on the first and last day of my trek and they were a dream. Comfortable, breathable, and stylish, with deep pockets that kept my phone secure and within reach for photo ops.
One factor that may turn people away is the price point. The Trail Tights run about $150 and their more technical trousers can run up to $250+, but are they worth it? I recommend looking at Fjallraven trousers as an investment piece, especially if you do lots of technical outdoor activities i.e. mountaineering, backpacking, canyoneering, etc. Plus, they maintain their value for resale. If the price still seems too steep for you or you just like to be eco-friendly and buy used, REI Re/supply always seems to have them in stock and Fjallraven even has a “Pre-loved” site where you can buy them at a steep discount.
